Rudy Giuliani Hospitalized; Spokesperson Describes Condition as 'Critical but Stable'

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 81, has been admitted to a hospital and is in "critical but stable condition," his spokesperson Ted Goodman said on May 3. Goodman offered no further details on the nature of Giuliani's illness or the expected length of his stay. The statement asked for public prayers and recalled Giuliani's reputation following the September 11, 2001 attacks. The former mayor has faced criminal charges in two states and a separate defamation lawsuit related to his post-2020 election work for President Donald Trump; he has denied wrongdoing. Giuliani was hospitalized last year after a car accident in New Hampshire.

Key Points

  • Rudy Giuliani, age 81, has been hospitalized and is reported to be in "critical but stable condition" by his spokesperson Ted Goodman.
  • The spokesman did not disclose the cause of the hospitalization or how long Giuliani will remain hospitalized; this lack of detail creates uncertainty for observers.
  • Giuliani previously represented President Donald Trump in efforts to overturn the 2020 election, which led to criminal charges in two states and a defamation lawsuit; he has denied wrongdoing. Sectors potentially affected include political leadership, legal services, and media covering political news.

WASHINGTON, May 3 - Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been admitted to a hospital and is being treated in what his spokesperson characterized as a "critical but stable condition," a statement released on Sunday said. The statement, issued by spokesman Ted Goodman, did not include additional specifics about the medical issue or how long Giuliani has been under medical care.

"Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and hes fighting with that same strength now," Goodman said in a statement. "We do ask that you join us in prayer for Americas Mayor Rudy Giuliani."

Giuliani, 81, rose to national prominence for his leadership in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 al Qaeda attack on New York City, a period during which he earned the widely used nickname "Americas Mayor." His recent public profile also includes legal and political controversies tied to the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.

He served as an attorney for President Donald Trump as the president pursued efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Those efforts led to criminal charges against Giuliani in two U.S. states, and he is also facing a defamation lawsuit brought by election workers. Giuliani has publicly denied any wrongdoing in the criminal matters.

Separately, the former mayor required hospitalization last year after a motor vehicle crash in New Hampshire, according to previously disclosed information. The current announcement did not link the present hospitalization to that earlier incident, nor did it provide further medical or logistical details.

The spokespersons brief statement left several open questions about the immediate situation: the underlying cause of the hospitalization, the expected duration of his stay, and any implications for Giulianis ongoing legal matters. Officials did not offer a timeline for additional updates.

As of the statement, those close to Giuliani and members of the public were asked to keep him in their thoughts and prayers. No other sources or officials provided comment in the announcement accompanying the spokesmans release.

Risks

  • Limited information about the nature of Giulianis condition and the duration of his hospital stay - this uncertainty affects political observers and legal teams tracking his cases.
  • Unclear implications for ongoing legal proceedings in which Giuliani faces criminal charges in two states and a defamation lawsuit - court schedules or case strategies could be affected depending on his health status.
