Italian equities ended Monday's session a touch weaker as sector-specific declines offset notable individual winners. At the close in Milan, the Investing.com Italy 40 was down 0.01%.
Among the index constituents, STMicroelectronics (BIT:STMMI) was the session's top gainer, climbing 5.03% - a 2.35 point increase - to finish at 49.04. Prysmian SpA (BIT:PRY) and FinecoBank Banca Fineco SpA (BIT:FBK) also posted positive moves; Prysmian rose 2.42% or 3.10 points to 131.05, while FinecoBank added 2.08% or 0.50 points to close at 24.58.
On the downside, Nexi SpA (BIT:NEXII) led losses, slipping 4.25% or 0.18 points to 4.06 at the close. Stellantis NV (BIT:STLAM) and Moncler SpA (BIT:MONC) were also among the weakest performers, with Stellantis down 4.11% or 0.19 to 4.43 and Moncler falling 3.84% or 1.88 points to 47.06.
Broad market breadth favored decliners: 438 stocks fell versus 262 that advanced on the Milan Stock Exchange, while 53 issues finished unchanged.
Notably, Stellantis' shares moved to a five-year low in the session - registering the 4.11% decline to 4.43 noted above.
Commodities saw modest strength. Crude oil for October delivery rose 0.58% or $0.47 to settle at $81.94 per barrel. Brent oil for October delivery increased 0.55% or $0.49 to $89.01 per barrel. Precious metals strengthened as well, with the December Gold Futures contract gaining 1.02% or $45.04 to trade at $4,482.34 a troy ounce.
Currency markets were largely steady. EUR/USD was effectively unchanged, moving 0.16% to 1.16, while EUR/GBP was little changed at 0.85, up 0.04%. The US Dollar Index Futures registered a 0.15% decline to 99.41.
Market participants will likely continue to monitor sector-specific developments that drove today's divergence between individual winners and laggards, as well as commodity and currency moves that accompanied the session.
