Volvo Cars said it will allow its electric vehicle drivers to use Tesla Supercharger stations in Europe beginning in the fourth quarter, and plans to transition selected models to the North American Charging System in Japan and South Korea by 2029. The move expands fast-charging access for Volvo drivers through the company’s app and builds on existing charging partnerships already available across multiple regions.

Key Points

  • Volvo app to enable charging at more than 20,000 Tesla Supercharger stations across 29 European countries starting in the fourth quarter - impacts automotive and charging infrastructure sectors.
  • Volvo plans to transition selected models to the North American Charging System in Japan and South Korea by 2029 - relevant to vehicle manufacturers and charging standards.
  • Volvo already reports access to over three million charging points globally via its app, including 120,000 in North America and over 1.2 million in Europe - relevant to EV drivers and energy networks.

Volvo Cars announced on Tuesday that it will broaden its drivers' access to Tesla Supercharger stations across Europe and extend compatibility in parts of the Asia-Pacific region. The company said that starting in the fourth quarter of this year, Volvo drivers will be able to charge their fully electric vehicles at more than 20,000 Tesla Supercharger stations across Europe using the Volvo app.

The European Supercharger network referenced by Volvo spans 29 countries. Volvo said the majority of those stations are located in Germany, France, Norway, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Spain. Access will be provided through the company’s app, which the automaker uses to connect drivers to public charging resources.

In addition to the immediate expansion in Europe, Volvo Cars outlined plans for the Asia-Pacific region. The company intends to transition selected models to the North American Charging System - NACS - in Japan and South Korea by 2029. Volvo said that move will provide access to the Tesla Supercharger network for Volvo drivers in those markets when the transition is complete.

"Volvo drivers already have access to over three million charging points globally through the Volvo app," said Alejandro Castro Pérez, Head of Energy Solutions at Volvo Cars. "Adding Tesla Superchargers in Europe means they now have even easier access to one of the most recognised fast charging networks."

Volvo supplied additional context on its current charging footprint. The company said electric Volvo drivers can use the Volvo Cars app at 120,000 charging points in North America, including Tesla Superchargers, as well as more than 1.2 million charging points across Europe.

The announced expansion combines an immediate software-enabled connection for Volvo drivers in Europe with a longer-term hardware and standards transition in parts of the Asia-Pacific region. The European roll-out is tied to app functionality and the existing Supercharger network identified by Volvo, while the Japan and South Korea changes are described as planned transitions for selected vehicle models by 2029.

Key details at a glance:

  • European access begins in the fourth quarter of this year for more than 20,000 Tesla Supercharger stations across 29 countries.
  • Planned transition to NACS for selected Volvo models in Japan and South Korea by 2029.
  • Current Volvo app access includes over three million charging points globally, with 120,000 in North America and more than 1.2 million in Europe.

Risks

  • The planned transition of selected models to NACS in Japan and South Korea is scheduled by 2029, indicating uncertainty in timing and scope for those markets - affects automotive and charging infrastructure markets.
  • European access depends on Volvo app integration with Tesla Superchargers starting in the fourth quarter, making availability contingent on successful software implementation - impacts drivers and charging service providers.
  • Not all models are indicated to be transitioned to NACS; the reference to "selected models" means coverage may be limited and phased, creating uncertainty for consumers and fleet operators.
