Jensen Huang, chief executive officer of NVIDIA, announced the company's Constellation campus in Taipei on Wednesday and disclosed plans to raise NVIDIA's annual spending in Taiwan to as much as $150 billion.

Huang said the company's Taiwan expenditures have expanded rapidly in recent years. He noted that NVIDIA's annual spending in Taiwan was in the range of $10-15 billion four or five years ago, had grown to about $100 billion currently, and could reach $150 billion per year going forward. Huang did not specify how long NVIDIA expects to sustain the planned $150 billion annual level.

The new Constellation facility will be located within the Beitou-Shilin Technology Park in northern Taipei and will occupy nearly 4 hectares of land. The building has been designed to host approximately 4,000 employees and is being positioned as one of the largest artificial intelligence research and development hubs in the Asia-Pacific region. NVIDIA has said the campus design echoes elements of the company headquarters in Santa Clara.

Construction on the campus is scheduled to begin this year, with operations targeted to commence in 2030, according to Huang. At the unveiling ceremony Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an presented Huang with a key to the city and a calligraphy scroll, and emphasized that the world is watching NVIDIA's role in shaping the future of AI.

During his remarks, Huang highlighted the concept of physical AI and discussed its potential implications for manufacturing. He said Taiwan partners will gain from NVIDIA technologies that are expected to transform manufacturing processes. Huang also announced that the campus NVIDIA Gear Store will be open to the public.

Separately, on Tuesday evening TSMC CEO Dr. C.C. Wei dined with Huang and members of the NVIDIA team while they were in Taipei.

Context and implications for industry

The announcement underscores a significant ramp-up in NVIDIA's Taiwan expenditures and establishes a large-scale R&D footprint in northern Taipei. The company frames the Constellation campus as a major AI research center for the region and connects its investment plans to anticipated changes in manufacturing enabled by NVIDIA technologies.

Timeline and next steps

  • Construction is set to start this year.
  • Operations are projected to begin in 2030.
  • The planned $150 billion annual investment figure was announced without an indicated duration.

Risks

  • Duration of the planned $150 billion annual investment was not specified, leaving uncertainty about how long the company will maintain that spending level - this affects capital allocation forecasts for the region.
  • The campus timeline shows construction beginning this year and operations starting in 2030, which introduces schedule risk between groundbreaking and full operational status that could impact expected R&D output and local supply-chain activity.
