Microsoft Corp. announced on Thursday the formation of a new business unit staffed with about 6,000 employees whose mission will be to assist companies in deploying artificial intelligence technologies.
According to the company’s announcement, the newly formed unit will include people with engineering backgrounds as well as specialists in corporate training and management. Microsoft also said it will bring industry-specific expertise into the group to address use cases across different sectors.
Judson Althoff, chief executive officer of Microsoft’s commercial business, said closer collaboration with customers is intended to make AI implementation more efficient and to yield insights that will feed back into Microsoft’s product development efforts.
The move reflects a different approach from a long-standing industry pattern in which software vendors typically handed lower-margin implementation work to consulting firms. In the market for AI tools, customers are increasingly demanding extra support to put advanced capabilities into production, the announcement noted.
Several technology companies have explored models that embed engineering talent with client teams. Palantir Technologies introduced one such approach of placing engineers inside customer organizations, and the concept has been adopted by other firms including Salesforce and OpenAI. Microsoft’s step follows a comparable initiative announced this week by Amazon.com’s cloud division.
This organizational change places Microsoft among a set of providers seeking to offer not just software, but also hands-on deployment assistance tailored to enterprise needs. The company framed the unit as a way to enhance cooperation with customers while also sharpening product development through direct operational experience.
Sectors impacted: enterprise software, cloud services, consulting and professional services.
