Melrose Industries PLC saw its shares decline 5% on Tuesday after revealing that an incident at the Garden Grove, California, site run by its GKN Aerospace Transparencies unit had interrupted operations.
The company said in a regulatory filing that the event began Thursday, May 21, when a thermal issue was identified in a storage area containing methyl methacrylate (MMA), which the filing described as high-strength aerospace acrylic materials. The Garden Grove facility is operated by GKN Aerospace Transparencies and supports advanced military and commercial programmes through manufacturing and aftermarket services.
As conditions developed, the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) issued mandatory evacuation orders for parts of the surrounding area on Friday, May 22, the filing said. Melrose reported that progress was made in the response operation over the subsequent days, and by Monday, May 25, local authorities had significantly reduced the mandatory evacuation zone.
Local authorities confirmed at 6 p.m. local time on May 25 that no injuries had occurred. Commenting on the response, Melrose said: "The progress made over the last few days is testament to the continued skill and dedication of all the support teams and services involved."
The company noted it is working closely with customers on operational recovery but did not provide a timetable for when normal activity at the site would resume. The Garden Grove facility employs around 500 people.
In its filing Melrose also referenced financial year 2025, stating that sales generated by the site were partially disclosed in the document but that the figure was obscured. The company added that further announcements would be made as appropriate.
