Deal details and carrier rationale
Air China Cargo Co., Ltd. has formalised a purchase agreement with Airbus for four additional A350F freighters, bringing the carrier's total commitment for that model to 10 aircraft. The cargo airline had previously placed an order for six A350F freighters in November 2025.
Wang Hongyan, Vice President of Air China Cargo, described the add-on as a deliberate strategic move for the airline: "The additional order is a crucial strategic decision for the company to further optimise our fleet structure and expand transport capacity. It will allow us to better match and meet the demands of the international air cargo market, laying a solid foundation for the company’s long-term stable development."
Airbus reaction and product positioning
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business, said the manufacturer welcomed Air China Cargo's decision to boost its order. "It reflects Air China Cargo’s full confidence in Airbus’ products and reaffirms the A350F’s leading position as the next-generation freighter," he said.
Fleet context and operational role
Air China Cargo began introducing Airbus freighters at the end of 2023 and currently operates a fleet of eight Airbus A330-200P2F aircraft. Airbus's A350F is slated to join that fleet and is intended to complement the A330-200P2F machines on long-haul and medium-to-long-haul routes, according to the carrier.
A350F technical and environmental attributes
The A350F offers a range capability of up to 8,700 kilometres while accommodating a payload of up to 111 tonnes. The airframe is built from more than 70% advanced materials and is 46 tonnes lighter than competitor aircraft, per Airbus specifications.
The freighter is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines and is credited with reductions in fuel consumption and carbon emissions of up to 20% compared with previous-generation aircraft of similar payload-range capability. Airbus reports the A350F meets ICAO's 2027 CO2 emission standards and can operate on up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at entry-to-service, with a stated objective to reach up to 100% SAF capability by 2030.
Orderbook status
At the end of April 2026, the A350F had accumulated 101 orders from 14 customers.
Takeaway
The four-aircraft add-on by Air China Cargo increases the airline's footprint in Airbus's next-generation freighter programme and reinforces Airbus' commercial positioning for the A350F. The company frames the order as a structural decision to better align capacity with international cargo demand while Airbus underscores the freighter's efficiency and environmental design.
