In Uruguay, the Pope is set to visit Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida. The Argentine portion of the trip will include Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Lujan. In Peru, the pontiff will stop in Chiclayo, Lima, Cusco and Pucallpa.
The Vatican noted the Pope’s personal connections to the region. The pontiff, who became the first U.S.-born pope last year, also holds Peruvian citizenship. He previously served in Peru as bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 until 2023 and worked there earlier in his career as a missionary and bishop, according to the announcement.
The forthcoming trip represents the most significant papal itinerary in South America since 2018, when Pope Francis visited Chile and Peru. The Vatican’s release also recalled that Francis, who was born in Argentina and became the first pontiff from the Americas, did not visit his birth country during his papacy.
