Ouster Inc (NASDAQ:OUST) shares climbed 3% in premarket trading Wednesday after the lidar maker and AIM Intelligent Machines disclosed a strategic supply arrangement to furnish digital lidar sensors for retrofitting heavy earthmoving equipment.
The agreement formalizes a commercial phase of a multi-year collaboration between the two companies. Under the terms described, Ouster will supply large volumes of its high-resolution Rev8 native color digital lidar sensors as AIM scales deployment of its autonomy kits to meet customer contracts across mining, construction and defense operations worldwide.
AIM intends to integrate the Rev8 sensor into its autonomy AI platform to strengthen the perception layer of automated machinery. The company said the Rev8 delivers 3D structural measurements, color point clouds and industrial-grade imagery tailored for autonomous work in complex settings. According to AIM, the sensor supports faster edge-computing, more efficient sensor-fusion workflows and improved safety and object-classification performance within high-dust industrial operations.
The autonomy kit AIM deploys is designed to retrofit existing heavy machinery in under 24 hours without voiding manufacturer warranties. Each retrofit package combines an armored enclosure that houses a single Ouster digital lidar with machine-angle sensors and an edge computer. AIM noted the platform runs independently of cellular networks, cloud infrastructure and GPS signals, enabling operation where such connectivity may be unreliable or unavailable.
"Ouster’s digital lidar has been foundational in our autonomy stack, helping us achieve a zero-accident safety record across all global deployments," said Ross Walker, Head of Product at AIM Intelligent Machines.
The announcement signals an expansion of commercial activity between the two firms, moving beyond collaborative development to scaled supply and field deployment. For Ouster, the deal centers on providing a high-volume supply of its Rev8 units as AIM fulfills contractual deployments for customers in heavy industries.
Summary of implications
- The agreement ties Ouster’s Rev8 lidar to AIM’s retrofit autonomy kits for heavy earthmoving equipment.
- AIM will integrate the sensors into its AI platform to enhance perception, sensor fusion and object classification in demanding industrial environments.
- Deployments target mining, construction and defense sites and are intended to operate independently of cellular, cloud and GPS services.
