Summary
U.S. markets closed lower on Tuesday with the Dow down 0.63%, the S&P 500 off 0.45% and the Nasdaq down 0.78%. Gains in Chevron, Skyworks, Qorvo and Revvity contrasted with declines in Nike, Amazon, Disney and multiple small-cap stocks. Market breadth favored decliners and volatility in S&P options edged higher. Commodities saw crude oil rise while gold fell, and the dollar strengthened slightly versus major peers.
Key points
- Major indices ended the session lower - Dow -0.63%, S&P 500 -0.45%, Nasdaq -0.78% - driven in part by weakness in Consumer Services, Utilities and Consumer Goods.
- Energy and semiconductor-related names outperformed, with Chevron reaching an all-time high and chip suppliers Skyworks and Qorvo hitting 52-week highs.
- Market breadth favored decliners on both NYSE and Nasdaq and the VIX rose, indicating a modest increase in implied volatility.
Risks and uncertainties
- Concentrated single-stock volatility among small-cap issues - several micro-cap names swung more than 50% in either direction, creating potential liquidity and execution risks for traders and investors focused on those names.
- Breadth imbalance - declining issues outnumbered advancers substantially on both exchanges, which could signal uneven underlying market strength across sectors.
- Commodity price swings - crude oil rallied in the session while gold retreated, introducing uncertainty for commodity-sensitive sectors and firms with exposure to energy and raw material costs.
