AIA Group Ltd shares advanced 3.8% to HK$74.4 during Friday trading after the pan-Asian life insurer released third-quarter figures that, while showing a year-on-year decline in new-business value, indicated ongoing resilience across its business.
The group reported a third-quarter value of new business (VONB) of $1.415 billion, a 5% decrease on a constant exchange rate basis. Management attributed the dip in part to weaker results in its Hong Kong and mainland China operations, which were partly offset by an 18% rise across the other reporting units.
Crucially for the near-term narrative, new-business value in September alone increased by more than 25% year-on-year, suggesting that the base-effect headwind evident earlier in the period may be easing. Alongside that rebound, the group's new-business value margin widened by 5.3 percentage points to 63.5%.
On a year-to-date basis, VONB for the nine months ended September 30 grew 5% to $4.63 billion. AIA said it expects "strong momentum" to continue into the fourth quarter.
Market positioning also supported the stock: a broader rotation out of technology names coincided with a rise in the Hang Seng of more than 1%, creating a more favourable backdrop for insurers and other non-tech sectors.
Taken together, the quarterly details point to a mixed but constructive operating picture. The headline VONB decline highlights near-term softness in core Greater China markets, while the sharp month-on-month improvement in September and the margin expansion underscore a degree of recovery and improved profitability per new policy.
Investors appeared to reward that combination of partial weakness and accelerating momentum, with the share price responding positively on the trading session following the results release.
