MEXICO CITY, July 15 - Chipotle Mexican Grill has inaugurated its first restaurant in Mexico, choosing the northern border state of Nuevo Leon for the debut, Alsea announced on Tuesday.
Alsea, a large restaurant operator whose portfolio includes brands such as Domino's Pizza, Starbucks and Burger King across Europe and Latin America, will serve as Chipotle’s local development and expansion partner. The company operates more than 4,830 locations in its markets, and it said the new outlet in Nuevo Leon represents the initial step in Chipotle’s planned expansion within Mexico.
The inaugural restaurant is scheduled to open on Thursday in Nuevo Leon, the state that shares a border with the United States. In a company statement, Alsea characterized the opening as the beginning of Chipotle’s growth strategy in Mexico and noted that the Mexican market has "high potential for the development of innovative proposals within the quick-service restaurant segment." The statement emphasized the early stage of the chain’s presence in the country by describing the opening as a starting point for broader development.
Chipotle currently operates more than 4,100 locations worldwide. Its menu offerings include burritos, bowls, tacos and salads. Alsea described its footprint as spanning multiple countries: Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, France, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Uruguay.
Market indicators shown alongside the announcement included trading movements for the companies mentioned: CMG was down 0.26% and ALSEA was down 2.87%.
Contextual note - The opening in Nuevo Leon establishes Chipotle’s first physical presence in the Mexican market through a local operator with an extensive restaurant network. Alsea’s role is defined as development and expansion partner, and the company publicly framed the launch as an initial step in a broader strategy.
