ASML Holding NV faces a potential supply management challenge as it supports large new fabrication initiatives, the company’s chief executive said on Wednesday.
Asked about incoming work tied to Elon Musk’s Terafab, Christophe Fouquet told Bloomberg Television that such undertakings are welcome provided ASML is not constrained by its supply capacity. "New projects are an opportunity as long as you’re not supply limited," he said. "So we have to make sure that this is really being taken care of, but I think the Terafab is an example of a major fab project."
ASML is uniquely positioned in the semiconductor equipment market as the only manufacturer of the most advanced lithography systems needed to produce state-of-the-art chips used for artificial intelligence training. The company said this month it will collaborate on the Terafab project, which aims to produce enough semiconductors to satisfy the combined needs of Elon Musk’s companies.
Fouquet’s comments highlight the tension ASML faces as it seeks to honor existing customer orders while responding to demand from large-scale new fabrication facilities. The CEO framed new fabs as potential business opportunities that must be assessed against the company’s ability to deliver machines on schedule.
Because ASML’s lithography equipment is essential to manufacturing advanced AI chips, any limitation in the company’s capacity to supply machines could affect chip production timelines for customers depending on those tools. The remarks did not specify measures ASML will take to address capacity constraints, nor did they provide details about timelines or the scale of commitments tied to the Terafab collaboration.
In sum, ASML’s engagement with Terafab underscores both the strategic value of large fab projects and the importance of ensuring supply capacity keeps pace with new demand. Fouquet framed the situation as a balance between pursuing growth opportunities and avoiding supply limitations that could impede delivery to existing and prospective customers.
