Apple on Monday introduced a new iteration of its artificial intelligence platform, offering an updated Siri experience and a set of software refinements the company says will improve performance and security. During a keynote at the companys Worldwide Developers Conference, software chief Craig Federighi described the refreshed Apple Intelligence system and explained its focus areas.
Federighi said the new software will leverage Alphabet Inc Class A (NASDAQ:GOOGL) technology and aim to better interpret the context around user requests. The enhancements are intended to make the digital assistant more capable of handling conversational inputs and to present a more chatbot-like interaction model through a standalone Siri app.
The update package, Federighi said, concentrates on three pillars - AI, performance improvements and security. The company indicated that some parts of the update will reduce loading times for software and photos, which Apple says should speed everyday tasks across its devices. In the security realm, Apple highlighted new child safety protections designed to manage screen time and to help prevent children from accessing inappropriate content.
Apple also confirmed a new name for the next macOS release for its Mac computer lineup: Golden Gate. The company further adjusted its Liquid Glass visual design, which it introduced last year. In response to customer feedback that Liquid Glass could make text harder to read for some users, Apple added a slider to let users control the magnitude of the effect.
Apple originally launched the Apple Intelligence platform two years ago. Federighi acknowledged that many earlier features arrived slowly or did not align with competing products, and the company appears to be addressing that history with the current round of updates. The renewed Siri will ship as a standalone application and adopt a more conversational, chatbot-like interface. Siri itself first appeared in 2011.
