Planned Maintenance Halts TurkStream Deliveries to Europe

Work at Russkaya pumping station and Turkish receiving terminals suspends flows through the only remaining Russian transit route to Europe

By Sofia Navarro

Planned maintenance at the Russkaya pumping station in Russia and receiving terminals in Turkey has interrupted gas deliveries via the TurkStream pipeline from June 2 through June 10, according to European transmission group ENTSOG and Bulgarian operator Bulgartransgaz. TurkStream is the sole operational route for Russian gas to Europe after the end of the Ukraine transit agreement on January 1, 2025. Countries receiving gas through the pipeline include Turkey, Serbia, Hungary and Slovakia.

Planned Maintenance Halts TurkStream Deliveries to Europe

Key Points

  • TurkStream deliveries to Europe were paused due to planned maintenance at the Russkaya pumping station and receiving terminals in Turkey.
  • Maintenance began on June 2 and is scheduled to run through June 10, according to ENTSOG and Bulgartransgaz.
  • TurkStream remains the only operational route for Russian gas transit to Europe after the Ukraine transit agreement ended on January 1, 2025; recipient countries include Turkey, Serbia, Hungary and Slovakia.

European gas deliveries carried by the TurkStream pipeline were halted as planned maintenance work got under way at key facilities, according to transmission data and statements from a national operator.

Data from the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) and a notice posted by Bulgarian gas network operator Bulgartransgaz show that maintenance began on June 2 at the Russkaya pumping station and at receiving terminals in Turkey. Bulgartransgazsaid the work is scheduled to continue through June 10.

The temporary suspension affects a pipeline that, following the lapse of a prior transit arrangement, is currently the only functioning passage for Russian gas into Europe. The five-year transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia ended on January 1, 2025, and was not renewed by Ukraine; TurkStream has therefore remained the single active route for Russian gas transit to European markets.

Countries listed as recipients of gas via TurkStream include Turkey, Serbia, Hungary and Slovakia. The maintenance notice and the transmission data identify the specific facilities undergoing works as the Russkaya pumping station and Turkish receiving terminals, with timing set out from June 2 until June 10.

Information on the interruption and the schedule comes from ENTSOG and Bulgartransgaz; the operators provided the dates and locations for the maintenance activities.

Timeline

  • June 2 - Maintenance begins at the Russkaya pumping station and Turkish receiving terminals, per Bulgartransgaz.
  • Through June 10 - Planned maintenance window specified by the operator.

Affected route and recipients

  • TurkStream is identified as the only operational route for Russian gas transit to Europe following the non-renewal of the Ukraine transit agreement that ended January 1, 2025.
  • Countries receiving gas through TurkStream include Turkey, Serbia, Hungary and Slovakia.

The reporting reflects the schedule and scope of the maintenance as provided by the named transmission and network operators. No additional operational details, causes beyond the planned maintenance, or further timelines were given in those notices.

Risks

  • Temporary interruption of TurkStream flows during the maintenance window - impacts gas supply to recipient countries and European gas markets.
  • Dependence on a single operational transit route - concentration risk for energy and gas sectors in Europe.
  • Uncertainty about timing beyond the scheduled maintenance window if additional operational information is not provided - potential market or supply planning effects.
