Production cut announced
Volkswagen will reduce output of the open-top T‑Roc Cabrio SUV at its Osnabrueck plant, a company spokesperson said on Tuesday. The decision has raised concerns among employee representatives who have been urging management to secure a long-term future for the site.
Timeline and lack of long-term plan
Production of the compact SUV - described by Volkswagen as a niche model in its lineup - is scheduled to continue at Osnabrueck through next year. The company, however, has no announced plan for the factory beyond that period.
Operational adjustments cited
The spokesperson said the company would extend a planned holiday closure by one week and introduce additional production-free days. She linked the change to seasonal demand patterns for convertibles, explaining that such models perform better in the Northern Hemisphere spring and early summer and typically see demand fall in the second half of the year.
Exploring alternative uses
Volkswagen has told staff it is in advanced talks with defence companies to identify another use for the Osnabrueck factory. The company characterized these discussions as active, but has not set out any confirmed next steps for the site.
Worker response and council concerns
A spokesperson for the Volkswagen general works council said the production reductions only intensify the uncertainty facing the plant’s 2,300 employees. The works council spokesperson described the situation as "precarious," saying the measures amount to a de-facto four-day week for the Osnabrueck site.
Outlook
The company will continue producing the T‑Roc Cabrio at Osnabrueck until next year under the current plan, while employee representatives press management for clarity on the plant’s longer-term prospects. Discussions with potential defence-sector partners are ongoing but no definitive outcome has been announced.
