On the Dow, Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) was the session's top performer, adding 3.94% or 4.49 points to finish at 118.31. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) climbed 3.07% or 10.33 points to close at 346.72, while Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) rose 2.56% or 26.33 points to 1,055.97.

Not all large-cap names advanced. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) fell 2.45% or 4.08 points to end at 162.50. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 2.23% or 6.75 points to 295.30, and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) slipped 1.63% or 4.30 points to 259.11.

Within the S&P 500, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) led gains, jumping 9.94% to 49.11. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) rose 6.96% to settle at 19.76, and Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) gained 6.01% to close at 353.17. On the downside, APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) lost 5.05% to 33.29, Paramount Skydance Corp (NASDAQ:PSKY) fell 4.31% to 9.33 and Costco Wholesale Corp (NASDAQ:COST) dropped 4.21% to 912.97.

The Nasdaq's biggest percentage movers included extreme swings among smaller-cap listings. Robin Energy Ltd (NASDAQ:RBNE) surged 1,645.65% to 8.03, Julong Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:JLHL) climbed 319.28% to 12.83 and Virax Biolabs Group Ltd (NASDAQ:VRAX) gained 100.63% to 6.38. Conversely, Aimei Health Technology Co Ltd (NASDAQ:AFJK) tumbled 50.42% to 12.89, Byrna Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:BYRN) plunged 33.67% to 3.94 and Rackspace Technology Inc (NASDAQ:RXT) fell 33.65% to 4.37.

Market breadth favored advancers. On the New York Stock Exchange, rising issues outnumbered decliners by 1,698 to 1,035, with 76 unchanged. On the Nasdaq Stock Market, 2,207 stocks rose, 1,185 declined and 163 were unchanged.

Byrna Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:BYRN) reached a 52-week low in the session, falling 33.67% or 2.00 to 3.94.

The CBOE Volatility Index, a gauge of implied volatility in S&P 500 options, declined 6.27% to 15.84.

Commodities moved unevenly. Gold futures for August delivery rose 1.19% or 48.52 to $4,130.92 a troy ounce. In energy markets, crude oil for August delivery slipped 2.31% or 1.70 to $71.82 a barrel, while the September Brent contract fell 2.52% or 1.97 to $76.05 a barrel.

Currency markets showed little change in the euro and a modest decline in the yen. EUR/USD was essentially unchanged, listed at 1.14 after a 0.11% move, and USD/JPY fell 0.12% to 162.38. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.04% at 100.72.
