Japan's stock market closed with a positive tone on Wednesday as the Nikkei 225 advanced 1.52% at the end of trading in Tokyo. Sector activity was led by gains in Real Estate, Banking and Textile names, which helped push the benchmark higher.
The session's strongest performers on the Nikkei included Kioxia Holdings Corp (TYO:285A), which surged 13.76% - a rise of 1,735.00 points - to finish at 14,340.00. Ibiden Co Ltd (TYO:4062) also registered solid gains, adding 7.94% or 711.00 points to close at 9,663.00. Renesas Electronics Corp (TYO:6723) rose 7.47% with a 215.50 point increase to end the day at 3,100.00.
Not all names participated in the rally. Konami Group Corporation (TYO:9766) led declines, dropping 6.37% or 1,560.00 points to settle at 22,940.00. Canon Inc (TYO:7751) fell 6.00% - down 294.00 points - to close at 4,610.00, and Nitto Denko Co (TYO:6988) slipped 5.89% or 212.00 points to finish at 3,388.00.
On market internals, decliners outnumbered advancers on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by a count of 2,245 to 1,268, while 209 issues ended unchanged. The disparity between the advancing index and the larger number of falling stocks highlights a mixed breadth profile even as the headline index moved higher.
Implied volatility on the Nikkei 225 options, as measured by the Nikkei Volatility gauge, eased 19.73% to 27.66, signaling a reduction in near-term option-implied uncertainty.
Commodities and currency moves accompanied the equity action. Crude oil for December delivery increased 1.95% - up $1.95 - to $101.85 a barrel. Brent futures for January delivery rose 1.83%, gaining $2.00 to $111.41 a barrel. By contrast, the December Gold Futures contract declined 0.74% - down $30.20 - to trade at $4,044.40 a troy ounce.
In FX markets, USD/JPY ticked up 0.02% to 157.98 while EUR/JPY eased 0.09% to 175.58. The US Dollar Index Futures was higher by 0.16% at 102.33.
Overall, the Tokyo session combined sector-led gains and pronounced moves in individual securities with a skew toward more falling issues than rising ones, while volatility and commodity prices moved in differing directions.
