Several leading U.S. technology firms have accelerated bond sales this year to bankroll expanded artificial intelligence buildouts, and the surge in issuance is being met with higher yields as investor demand cools.
Through July 7, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and Oracle issued roughly $194 billion of bonds in 2026, up about 79% from approximately $108 billion for all of 2025, based on LSEG data. Goldman Sachs projects that issuance by the five largest hyperscalers - a group that includes Microsoft - could reach about $250 billion in 2026 and roughly $400 billion in 2027.
The stepped-up supply has translated into wider spreads above risk-free rates for these investment-grade borrowers across multiple maturity bands. For Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Oracle, the median spread on bonds maturing in 2- to 4-year windows climbed to 40 basis points from 30 basis points in 2025. The middle of the curve for 5- to 7-year debt moved to a median of 60 basis points from 50 basis points, while very long-dated paper maturing in more than 20 years saw median spreads increase to 118 basis points from 108.5 basis points.
Secondary-market performance has shown signs of deterioration as well. Of 91 hyperscaler bonds issued in 2026 for which comparable pricing data was available, 78 were trading at higher yields on July 28 than at the time of issuance. The median yield increase for those bonds was about 22 basis points.
Industry and asset-management observers note that the dynamic reflects a combination of heavy capital spending plans and a finite pool of investor demand for large, concentrated offerings. "We re in a place where we re making these very large investments with the bet that we have return on invested capital coming in the future," said Colby Stilson, head of fixed income at Brown Advisory.
Stilson added that the volume of ongoing issuance is unlikely to disappear in the near term, which places structural pressure on spreads as markets absorb repeated, sizable deals.
Investor order patterns corroborate the shift. Apollo Global Management reported that cover ratios - the measure of investor orders relative to the amount issued - for hyperscaler bond auctions fell from nearly 5 times in February to below 2 times in July. By way of example, research compiled by AlphaSense showed Amazon s U.S.-dollar bond sale in March was about 3.4 times oversubscribed, while a July offering was around 1.6 times oversubscribed. A cover ratio of three times indicates investors bid for three dollars of bonds for each dollar sold.
Falling cover ratios imply that issuers may need to offer wider spreads or concessions to attract sufficient demand for future deals. New-issue concession data in the LSEG dataset supports that trend: the median deal-level concession rose to 12 basis points in 2026 from 2.25 basis points in 2025, with the most recent reading influenced by an Amazon transaction.
Sage Advisory quantified some of the market impact of the newest offerings. It said Amazon s latest $25 billion bond sale pushed the spread on a 30-year Amazon bond issued earlier this year about 20 basis points wider. The firm estimated that the hyperscalers combined U.S.-dollar debt footprint had more than doubled since September to over $360 billion.
"Each successive jumbo deal has pressured spreads wider before they eventually stabilize and experience modest rallies," Sage Advisory said, pointing to a pattern in which large, repeated transactions force interim repricing across a company s outstanding curve.
Goldman Sachs has put the broader capital picture into sharper relief: it expects hyperscaler capital expenditure to reach about $750 billion in 2026, against projected operating cash flow of roughly $778 billion. Goldman sees debt issuance amounting to about one-third of capital spending this year and roughly 35% in 2027.
Goldman also flagged that market saturation and issuer concentration are likely to become more binding constraints as issuance accelerates. Falling cover ratios and widening spreads indicate investors are already seeking higher compensation to absorb the expanding supply.
Market participants continue to watch whether the elevated issuance pace and more selective investor demand will force further concessions or change the timing and size of future transactions. For now, the large planned capital outlays tied to AI-related buildouts appear to be the dominant driver of supply, and that element shows no sign of abating.
