Brazilian equities closed lower on Monday in Sao Paulo, with the Bovespa index finishing the trading day down 0.91%.
Sector pressure from Basic Materials, Real Estate and Industrials weighed on the market, producing a session where falling stocks exceeded advances. At the close, 524 issues on the B3 exchange were down, 448 rose and 45 were unchanged.
Among individual stocks, Totvs SA (BVMF:TOTS3) posted the largest gains in percentage terms, climbing 4.34% - an increase of 1.43 points - to finish at 34.51. Hypera SA (BVMF:HYPE3) also performed well, adding 3.38% or 0.77 points to close at 23.53. Companhia de Saneamento de Minas Gerais Copasa MG (BVMF:CSMG3) rose 1.64%, up 0.92 points to end the session at 57.05.
On the downside, CSN Mineracao SA (BVMF:CMIN3) registered the steepest drop, falling 6.85% - 0.46 points - to a closing price of 6.26. Usinas Siderurgicas de Minas Gerais SA USIMINAS Pref (BVMF:USIM5) declined 4.74% or 0.35 points to 7.03, while Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (BVMF:CSNA3) lost 4.65% or 0.31 points to close at 6.35.
Volatility on Bovespa options, measured by the CBOE Brazil ETF Volatility gauge, rose 0.72% to 40.71, marking a new three-month high for the series.
Commodities trading showed mixed moves. Gold futures for December delivery fell 1.61% - down $70.93 - to $4,337.97 a troy ounce. Crude oil for October delivery increased 1.86%, rising $1.86 to $101.91 a barrel. The December US coffee C contract gained 1.24% or $3.55 to trade at $289.25.
In foreign exchange, the Brazilian real weakened modestly versus the dollar: USD/BRL rose 0.56% to 5.15. EUR/BRL was effectively unchanged, moving 0.03% to 5.94. The US Dollar Index Futures was higher as well, up 0.38% at 99.22.
The session reflected a market balancing act: solid moves in select consumer and software names contrasted with sizable declines among miners and steelmakers, producing negative breadth and a higher volatility reading on Bovespa options.
Market participants may watch how commodity prices, currency swings and sector-specific flows continue to influence the Bovespa in coming sessions.
