CCTV’s military channel and the state-backed Global Times published and highlighted footage on Wednesday of the destroyer firing the YJ-20, a missile unveiled at a military parade in Beijing last September. While the YJ-20 has been publicly associated with the navy’s larger Type-055 cruisers, the Global Times said this is the first time the weapon has been recorded firing from a Type 052 vessel.
The Type 052 class is numerically important for China’s surface fleet. China deploys roughly 40 Type 052s, which form the backbone of its destroyer force and are frequently observed operating in the disputed South China Sea and other parts of East Asia, according to the state report.
