Poland's main equity index closed lower on Wednesday, with the WIG30 finishing the session down 0.64% as losses concentrated in the Oil & Gas, Energy and Banking sectors dragged the market into negative territory.
The session's top performers on the WIG30 included Benefit Systems SA (WA:BFT), which rose 5.48% or 264.00 points to close at 5,080.00. X Trade Brokers Dom Maklerski SA (WA:XTB) added 1.47% or 2.10 points to end at 145.42, and KGHM Polska Miedz SA (WA:KGH) gained 1.44% or 4.70 points to finish at 331.65.
On the downside, Grupa KĘTY SA (WA:KTY) fell 2.69% or 34.00 points, closing at 1,230.00. Allegro (WA:ALEP) declined 2.09% or 0.97 points to 45.15 at the close, while Orange Polska SA (WA:OPL) was down 1.73% or 0.24 points, finishing the session at 13.66.
Market breadth on the Warsaw Stock Exchange favored decliners, with 278 stocks slipping versus 234 that advanced; 125 stocks ended the day unchanged.
Commodities and currencies
Commodity markets saw notable movement that paralleled some of the sector pressure in equities. Crude oil for October delivery fell 3.28% or 3.47, settling at $102.36 a barrel. Brent oil for November delivery dropped 2.75% or 2.99 to $105.76 a barrel. In contrast, the December Gold Futures contract climbed 1.31% or 56.92 to trade at $4,389.72 a troy ounce.
Exchange rates reflected a modest depreciation of the zloty: EUR/PLN rose 0.43% to 4.36, while USD/PLN increased 0.49% to 3.78. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.08% at 99.42.
