Yamaha Motor Co Ltd (TYO:7272) led the day with a 13.40% gain, adding 178.50 points to finish at 1,511.00 and rising to a 52-week high. Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (TYO:5801) climbed 11.44%, or 366.00 points, to close at 3,566.00. Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (TYO:6302) also posted a strong finish, up 8.19% or 433.00 points to 5,720.00 in late trade.

On the downside, several consumer and materials names weighed on the session. NH Foods Ltd (TYO:2282) was the weakest performer on the Nikkei, sliding 8.41% or 532.00 points to end at 5,796.00. AGC Inc (TYO:5201) slipped 7.88%, down 478.00 points to 5,585.00, while Yamato Holdings Co., Ltd. (TYO:9064) fell 6.15% or 125.50 points to close at 1,915.50.

Market breadth in Tokyo was mixed by the close. Declining issues narrowly outnumbered advancers on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with 1,783 stocks down versus 1,706 advancing, and 256 issues finishing unchanged.

Volatility also moved higher during the session. The Nikkei Volatility index, which tracks implied volatility for Nikkei 225 options, rose 20.83% to 35.50.

Energy and precious metals saw modest moves. Crude oil for September delivery increased 0.12%, or $0.10, to $80.44 a barrel. Brent oil for October delivery gained 0.86%, or $0.72, to $84.49 a barrel. The December Gold Futures contract was up 0.71%, adding $28.84 to trade at $4,119.34 a troy ounce.

Currency markets showed small gains for the yen crosses reported at the close. USD/JPY rose 0.32% to 157.68, while EUR/JPY increased 0.31% to 181.45. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.13% at 99.91.
