Portugal's stock market ended the trading day higher on Monday, with the PSI finishing up 0.61% in Lisbon. Broad strength in the Financials, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors supported the advance.
Among individual performers, Teixeira Duarte (ELI:TDSA) led gains on the PSI, closing 2.35% higher at 0.50. Jeronimo Martins SGPS SA (ELI:JMT) added 1.50%, finishing the session at 17.62, while Banco Comercial Portugues (ELI:BCP) rose 1.41% to close at 1.08.
On the downside, Semapa (ELI:SEM) was the weakest of the day, slipping 1.29% to end at 19.84. CTT Correios de Portugal SA (ELI:CTT) declined 0.97%, closing at 6.10, and The Navigator Company SA (ELI:NVGR) edged down 0.12% to 3.26.
Advancers outnumbered decliners on the Lisbon Stock Exchange by 18 to 8, with five stocks finishing unchanged.
Shares of Banco Comercial Portugues (ELI:BCP) reached multi-year highs during the session, rising to 5-year levels as the stock moved up 1.41% or 0.02 to 1.08 by the close.
Commodity markets showed notable weakness on the day. Brent oil for October delivery fell 4.84% or 4.26 to settle at $83.67 per barrel. US crude for September delivery tumbled 5.99% or 5.07, closing at $79.60 a barrel. In precious metals, the December Gold Futures contract declined 0.39% or 16.00 to trade at $4,091.00 a troy ounce.
In currency markets, EUR/USD was recorded as unchanged 0.18% at 1.15, while EUR/GBP was unchanged 0.19% at 0.86. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 99.83.
Market participants saw a mixed picture at the sector and single-stock level: Financials and consumer-oriented names helped drive the PSI higher, while select materials and industrial firms recorded declines. Oil and crude futures slid sharply during the session, while the dollar registered a small gain in futures trading.
