Mexico's benchmark equity gauge finished the trading day in positive territory on Thursday, with the S&P/BMV IPC advancing 0.55% at the close. The market's upward move was concentrated in Industrials, Consumer Goods & Services and Consumer Staples, which collectively supported the session's gains.
Among individual stocks on the S&P/BMV IPC, Industrias Penoles Sab De CV (BMV:PEOLES) led the list of winners, climbing 3.07% - a gain of 26.49 points - to finish at 889.20. Qualitas Controladora, SAB De CV (BMV:Q) also registered a solid advance, rising 2.34% or 3.49 points to close at 152.42. Regional SAB de CV (BMV:RA) was up 2.02%, adding 2.70 points to end the session at 136.43.
Not all large-cap names moved higher. The session's steepest decline came from Controladora Vuela Compania de Aviacion SAB de CV (BMV:VOLARA), which fell 3.53% - down 0.43 points - to trade at 11.74 at the close. Grupo Carso, S.A.B. De C.V. (BMV:GCARSOA1) slipped 3.13% or 4.37 points to finish at 135.14, while Grupo Financiero Inbursa, SAB De CV (BMV:GFINBURO) declined 1.65%, a drop of 0.73 points to 43.50.
At the market level, decliners outnumbered advancers on the Mexico Stock Exchange, with 142 stocks falling versus 108 advancing; 15 issues finished unchanged.
Commodities and currency markets showed modest moves alongside equities. Gold futures for December delivery rose 0.66% - an increase of 29.85 - to $4,575.15 a troy ounce. In energy markets, crude oil for October delivery gained 2.16%, up $1.82 to $86.21 a barrel, while the October Brent contract edged down 0.02% to $93.19 a barrel.
In currency crosses, the peso was slightly firmer against the dollar: USD/MXN moved up 0.07% to 16.96, while EUR/MXN was essentially unchanged, moving 0.01% to 19.80. The US Dollar Index Futures also ticked higher, rising 0.05% to 98.79.
Market participants should note the uneven internal breadth of the session - the benchmark gained despite a larger number of declining stocks - and the divergence among sizable components of the index, where gains in some industrial and consumer names were offset by weakness in select transportation and conglomerate names.
