MDA Space stock rose 5.2% in morning trading to $33.90 following an early announcement that it had secured a $474 million follow-on manufacturing contract from Telesat LEO ULC. Under the deal, MDA will produce 27 additional AURORA next-generation broadband satellites for Telesat’s Lightspeed low Earth orbit constellation.
The company disclosed the contract before the U.S. market opened, at the same time Telesat revealed it had won a $2.3 billion Arctic military satellite communications contract with the Canadian government. Telesat described that award as the largest in its history, and that government contract is the direct driver of the expanded manufacturing order awarded to MDA Space.
With the new order, MDA’s total AURORA commitment for the Lightspeed program rises to 225 satellites, up from the previously announced 198 units. The company said the bulk of the $474 million in additional contract value is expected to be added to MDA’s backlog in the third quarter of 2026, a timeline the market is treating as an important revenue-recognition milestone.
Beyond the unit increase, the revised deal mandates that 500 MHz of military Ka-band spectrum be integrated into all Lightspeed satellites currently under construction. That technical change shifts part of the program toward defence-focused connectivity across Canada’s Arctic region, aligning the Lightspeed constellation more closely with military communications requirements.
Separately, MDA Space was named prime contractor for a secure UHF and X-band constellation in medium Earth orbit under the same Canadian government program, with Telesat acting as a subcontractor. That prime-contractor role further strengthens MDA’s positioning within the defence segment of the space industry and expands its responsibilities beyond manufacturing into system-level integration for military communications assets.
The procurement news arrived just days before MDA Space is scheduled to release second quarter 2026 financial results, which are due before the market opens on August 7. That timing added an element of investor anticipation to trading today and likely intensified interest ahead of the earnings report.
Market conditions also provided a constructive backdrop for the stock move. During the session, the S&P 500 rose 0.6%, the Dow Jones gained 1.1%, and the Nasdaq climbed 1.2%, reflecting broad risk appetite that amplified the stock-specific catalyst.
Taken together, the follow-on manufacturing order, the inclusion of military spectrum in satellites under construction, and MDA’s designation as a prime contractor for a related secure MEO constellation represent a material expansion of the company’s backlog and defence-related scope. Those developments were the proximate drivers of the early trading spike in MDA Space shares and underlie the bullish market reaction observed today.
