Portugal's equity market closed in positive territory on Tuesday, with the PSI index advancing 0.93% to reach a new one-month high at the end of trading in Lisbon. Sector strength in Utilities, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods helped push the market higher.
The session's strongest performers on the PSI included EDP Energias de Portugal SA, which gained 3.17% and finished the day at 4.66. Energy company Galp Energia Nom added 2.29%, closing at 21.47, while food and hospitality group Ibersol SGPS advanced 1.86% to end trading at 9.84.
On the downside, Banco Comercial Portugues was effectively flat at 1.10, showing a minor quoted change of -0.18%. EDP Renovaveis slipped 0.15% to close at 13.57 and construction group Mota Engil SGPS SA eased 0.13% to 4.49.
Market breadth on the Lisbon Stock Exchange favored rising issues, with 16 stocks up, 8 down and 6 unchanged at the close.
Commodities and currencies
In commodities trading, Brent oil for October delivery rose 0.59% to $91.41 a barrel. U.S. crude for October delivery increased 0.82% to $84.43 a barrel. Precious metals moved in the opposite direction, with the December Gold Futures contract falling 1.12% to trade at $4,423.55 a troy ounce.
Foreign exchange rates showed little change. EUR/USD was essentially unchanged, moving by 0.01% to 1.16, while EUR/GBP held flat at 0.86. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.03%, trading at 99.51 at the close.
