JPMorgan announced a long-term commitment to channel in excess of $750 billion into the U.S. housing sector through 2035 as part of its American Dream Initiative. The program, unveiled earlier this year, is intended to lift housing supply and back broader homeownership access while also promoting local economic activity through increased small-business lending and expanded access to healthcare.
Under the plan, the bank will seek to grow its mortgage lending by more than 40%, with an explicit aim of helping 500,000 customers purchase homes. The housing market has been described by the bank as subdued as elevated borrowing costs and high prices driven by shortages have sidelined many prospective buyers.
JPMorgan characterized the commitment as a near 40% rise in capital allocated to housing compared with the previous decade. As part of the pledge, the bank will work to produce and preserve over 1 million affordable housing units and will advocate for policies that support development.
Institutional engagement is also part of the strategy. JPMorgan will chair the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's newly formed Housing Advisory Council, positioning the bank to play a role in shaping industry and policy discussions. To expand its retail footprint in home lending, the bank will hire 850 new home lending advisors.
Michelle Herrick, JPMorgan's head of commercial real estate, framed the initiative as linked to economic opportunity, saying, "An affordable and resilient housing market is essential to driving economic growth and increasing opportunity." The bank is the largest U.S. bank by assets and market value and reported originating $52.8 billion in home loans last year, a nearly 30% jump from 2024.
The American Dream Initiative bundles the housing commitment with efforts to spur local economies through scaled small-business lending and broader healthcare access. The announced housing targets set out specific production and lending objectives while also signaling expanded policy and advisory roles for the bank in housing development forums.
Context and scope:
- The plan covers deployment through 2035 and focuses on increasing supply, supporting home purchases, and preserving affordable units.
- Operational moves include significant hiring of home lending advisors and leadership in a national housing advisory council.
- The initiative is one element of a wider push that also addresses small-business lending and healthcare access as part of local economic development.
