Conversely, the weakest performers on the Nifty were Grasim Industries Ltd (NSE:GRAS), which declined 4.23% or 138.00 points to close at 3,122.00; HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd (NSE:HDFL), which fell 3.43% or 18.95 points to finish at 534.15; and Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (NSE:HLL), down 2.67% or 57.00 points to 2,081.00 in late trade.
On the BSE Sensex 30, Bajaj Finance Ltd (BO:BJFN) was among the leading gainers, rising 1.06% to 1,153.00. Tata Steel Ltd (BO:TISC) climbed 0.58% to settle at 190.20, and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (BO:MAHM) gained 0.58% to close at 3,405.00.
The weakest performers on the Sensex were Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (BO:HLL), which slipped 1.70% to 2,084.00 in late trade; Nestle India Ltd (BO:NEST), which lost 1.65% to settle at 1,492.00; and NTPC Ltd (BO:NTPC), which retreated 1.63% to end at 341.95.
Market breadth was tilted toward decliners. On the National Stock Exchange, falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones by 1,400 to 1,158, with 56 issues unchanged. On the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1,993 shares declined while 1,981 advanced and 174 ended unchanged.
Certain individual stock milestones were noted during the session. HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd (NSE:HDFL) dropped to three-year lows, losing 3.43% or 18.95 to reach 534.15. By contrast, Bajaj Finance Ltd (BO:BJFN) rose to all-time highs during the session, gaining 1.06% or 12.10 to finish at 1,153.00.
Volatility and commodity prices showed upward moves. The India VIX, a gauge of implied volatility for Nifty 50 options, rose 2.12% to 12.18. Gold Futures for December delivery increased 0.37% or 15.05 to $4,105.55 a troy ounce. In energy markets, September delivery crude oil climbed 1.99% or $1.60 to $81.94 a barrel, while the October Brent contract rose 2.52% or $2.11 to $85.88 a barrel.
In currency markets, USD/INR moved up 0.07% to 95.40 and EUR/INR rose 0.06% to 109.79. The US Dollar Index Futures was higher by 0.10% at 99.89.
