European share prices began August with cautious optimism on Monday after comments from U.S. President Donald Trump that talks with Iran were due later in the day. The prospect of diplomacy briefly eased pressure on crude futures and supported a modest uptick in equities.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index was up 0.4%, trading at 651.88 by 7:09 GMT. Sector moves were mixed: energy stocks fell around 2% as oil futures slid roughly 5.9% following the U.S. president’s announcement that he had held off on a fresh attack on Iran while pursuing a quick deal aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. By contrast, the travel and leisure sector recorded a notable advance of about 2.1%.
Market participants had already been contending with elevated crude prices: worries over the U.S.-Iran confrontation had earlier pushed Brent crude above $90 a barrel. That backdrop contributed to volatility but did not prevent the STOXX 600 from finishing July higher — the benchmark rose more than 1% over the month, with stronger-than-expected corporate earnings helping to offset geopolitical concerns.
Europe’s sensitivity to swings in energy costs remains a central theme because of the region’s dependence on imported oil. Movements in oil futures translated directly into sector performance on the open.
Corporate headlines also influenced individual stocks. Prysmian climbed 1.5% after agreeing to acquire U.S. electrical products maker Atkore for $95 per share in cash, a deal that implies an enterprise value of about $3.8 billion. In contrast, AstraZeneca shares fell sharply, tumbling 7% following reports of a possible combination with U.S.-based Bristol Myers Squibb.
Overall, the market reaction on Monday reflected a mix of geopolitical relief, which eased energy-driven pressures, and company-specific deal news that reshuffled investor positioning in select sectors.
