Australian shares closed higher on Monday, with the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 finishing the session up 0.47%.
The headline index ended at 9,019.30, up 42.50 points, as sector strength in Utilities, Industrials and Consumer Discretionary supported the advance.
Among individual stocks, DroneShield Ltd (ASX:DRO) was the top performer on the S&P/ASX 200, gaining 6.78% or 0.12 points to finish at 1.81. Domino's Pizza Enterprises Ltd (ASX:DMP) added 6.14% or 1.14 points to close at 19.71, while Treasury Wine Estates Ltd (ASX:TWE) rose 6.09% or 0.30 points to end the session at 5.23.
On the downside, Champion Iron Ltd (ASX:CIA) led decliners, slipping 3.67% or 0.13 points to close at 3.29. Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX:FMG) fell 3.46% or 0.64 points to 17.87, and Generation Development Group Ltd (ASX:GDG) was down 2.68% or 0.11 points to 4.00.
Market breadth was mixed: 554 stocks rose across the Sydney exchange, 525 declined and 401 finished unchanged.
Two companies hit notable lows in the session: Champion Iron's shares fell to five-year lows, closing at 3.29, and Fortescue's shares moved to 52-week lows at 17.87.
Implied volatility for the benchmark was lower, with the S&P/ASX 200 VIX dropping 4.47% to 10.90.
Commodities showed divergent moves. Gold futures for December delivery rose 0.41% or 16.82 to trade at $4,123.82 a troy ounce. By contrast, crude oil weakened: the September contract fell 6.38% or 5.40 to $79.27 a barrel, and the October Brent contract declined 5.55% or 4.88 to $83.05 a barrel.
Currency markets were relatively subdued. The Australian dollar was unchanged versus the US dollar, with AUD/USD at 0.70, while AUD/JPY eased 0.44% to 110.18. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.20% at 99.59.
Intraday price action highlighted selective strength among consumer and small-cap technology-related names, while major miners and certain developers moved lower. Volatility retreated and gold advanced as oil prices corrected lower.
