Taiwan shares advance as Taiwan Weighted climbs to new record

Plastics, chemicals and biotech stocks lead gains as benchmark index rises 1.28% to an all-time high

Taiwan equities closed higher on Tuesday, propelled by strength in the Plastic, Chemical and Biotech & Medical Care sectors. The Taiwan Weighted index rose 1.28% to reach a fresh record level. Top session performers included GEM Services Inc, Onano Industrial Corp and Lelon Electronics, while Reward Wool Industry, Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group and Macnica Anstek finished as the weakest names. Energy and precious metals futures moved lower, and the US Dollar Index Futures slipped modestly higher.

At the close, the Taiwan Weighted added 1.28% and registered a new all time high.

The strongest performers on the Taiwan Weighted were GEM Services Inc (TW:6525), which climbed 10.00% or 13.00 points to close at 143.00. Onano Industrial Corp (TW:6405) also rose 10.00% or 6.50 points to finish at 71.50, while Lelon Electronics Corp (TW:2472) advanced 9.99% or 36.50 points to end the day at 402.00.

On the downside, Reward Wool Industry Corp (TW:1423) posted the largest decline, slipping 11.69% or 5.25 points to close at 39.65. Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group Co Ltd (TW:1589) fell 9.92% or 0.61 points to finish at 5.54, and Macnica Anstek Inc (TW:3528) dropped 9.80% or 12.00 points to end at 110.50.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Taiwan Stock Exchange by 0 to 0.

Several individual stocks moved to milestone levels during the session. Shares of GEM Services Inc (TW:6525) rose to an all time high after gaining 10.00% or 13.00 points to 143.00. Lelon Electronics Corp (TW:2472) also reached an all time high, up 9.99% or 36.50 to 402.00. Conversely, Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group Co Ltd (TW:1589) fell to an all time low, losing 9.92% or 0.61 to 5.54.

Commodities traded lower on the session. Crude oil for August delivery was down 1.03% or 0.76, trading at $73.10 a barrel. Brent oil for September delivery declined 1.07% or 0.83 to $76.69 a barrel. The August Gold Futures contract fell 1.49% or 62.48 to trade at $4,140.22 a troy ounce.

In currency moves, USD/TWD was down 0.02% to 31.65, while TWD/CNY was unchanged at 0.19% to 0.21. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 100.83.
