Mistral AI, the Paris-based artificial intelligence startup, is reported to be in negotiations to raise about €3 billion ($3.5 billion) at a valuation of roughly €20 billion. Sources cited in a Friday report indicated that the talks are at an early stage and that funding terms remain subject to change.
Company officials and investors have not finalized terms, and the prospective €20 billion valuation could move higher depending on investor appetite. By comparison, Mistral's valuation stood at €11.7 billion when it completed a funding round in September of last year.
Shareholder backing and prior commitments
ASML Holding NV is the single largest shareholder in Mistral, having invested €1.3 billion and taken an 11% stake in the company during last year’s round. Other prior backers include France’s state bank Bpifrance and U.S. venture capital firms Lightspeed Venture Partners, General Catalyst and Andreessen Horowitz.
Business positioning and operations
Founded in 2023 by researchers who previously worked at Google DeepMind and Meta Platforms Inc., Mistral presents itself as a European alternative to Silicon Valley AI leadership. The company acts as an infrastructure provider for governments and firms across Europe, developing cloud-computing facilities that it owns and operates in France and Sweden.
Mistral markets AI services aimed at engineering and manufacturing use cases and has signed agreements with large European industrial groups, including Airbus SE and BMW AG. The firm has also proposed an alternative model to Anthropic's Mythos for use by European banks and other institutions; that model is intended to help identify cybersecurity weaknesses.
Last month, Chief Executive Officer Arthur Mensch described such AI capabilities as posing a national security risk, saying, "We must have control over this technology."
Commercial context
The planned fundraising is intended to supply Mistral with capital as it competes in a global computing race against large players based in the United States and China. Company representatives have not disclosed a timeline for closing any potential financing.
