Mexican equities slide as three major sectors weigh on benchmark

Mexican stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the S&P/BMV IPC retreating 1.23% as declines in Industrials, Consumer Goods & Services and Consumer Staples pressured the market. While a handful of names finished higher, broader market participation favored sellers. Commodities and currency moves accompanied the equity declines.

Among individual names, Becle SA (BMV:CUERVO) was one of the session's stronger performers, finishing up 2.54% or 0.39 points at 15.73. Wal Mart de Mexico SAB de CV (BMV:WALMEX) added 1.58% or 0.77 points to close at 49.54, and Gentera SAB de CV (BMV:GENTERA) rose 1.21% or 0.49 points to finish at 40.88.

On the downside, Fomento Economico Mexicano UBD (BMV:FEMSAUBD) led losses, falling 5.23% or 11.67 points to end the day at 211.26. Controladora Vuela Compania de Aviacion SAB de CV (BMV:VOLARA) declined 3.28% or 0.45 points to 13.29, while America Movil SAB de CV M (BMV:AMXB) slipped 3.24% or 0.73 points to close at 21.77.

Decliners outnumbered advancers on the Mexico Stock Exchange, with 126 stocks falling versus 114 advancing; 13 issues finished unchanged.

Commodity markets showed mixed moves during the session. Gold futures for August delivery were reported up 0.67% or 27.05, trading at 4,065.75 a troy ounce. Crude oil for September delivery climbed 6.39% or 4.93 to reach 82.10 a barrel, and the October Brent contract edged up 0.01% or 0.01 to trade at 88.12 a barrel.

In currency markets, USD/MXN was higher by 0.08% at 17.44, while EUR/MXN rose 0.03% to 19.99.

Elsewhere, the US Dollar Index Futures was reported down 0.58% at 100.68.


This session's results reflect concentrated weakness across several consumer and industrial names that helped tip the benchmark into negative territory despite pockets of outperformance among select consumer and small-cap stocks. Market breadth favored sellers and was accompanied by notable moves in oil and precious metals prices as well as modest shifts in the peso against the dollar and euro.
