Energy and industrial pressure showed in Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), down 2.46% or 4.79 points to 190.00, and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which fell 1.76% or 15.61 points to 873.12.

Looking at the S&P 500 constituents, Autodesk Inc (NASDAQ:ADSK) led gains with a 7.70% rise to 225.91. Lamb Weston Holdings Inc (NYSE:LW) climbed 7.12% to settle at 53.11, and Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) gained 7.09% to close at 278.37.

On the downside for the S&P 500, CH Robinson Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ:CHRW) fell 6.46% to 174.46, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) was down 5.18% to 494.90, and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) declined 4.99% to 196.51.

The Nasdaq Composite's biggest winners included T3 Defense Inc (NASDAQ:DFNS), which surged 201.15% to 13.10, Baiya International Group Inc (NASDAQ:BIYA), up 116.06% to 4.17, and Entera Bio Ltd (NASDAQ:ENTX), which gained 91.71% to close at 3.93.

Significant declines on the Nasdaq included C3is Inc (NASDAQ:CISS), down 80.31% to 0.10, AiRWA Inc (NASDAQ:YYAI), which fell 73.51% to 3.00, and MapLight Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MPLT), which dropped 72.91% to 9.90.

Market breadth favored advancing issues on both principal U.S. exchanges. On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,662 issues advanced and 1,039 declined, with 95 unchanged. On the Nasdaq, 2,049 issues rose, 1,343 fell, and 184 were unchanged.

Notable intra-stock milestones recorded during the session included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) reaching five-year highs, closing at 178.22 after a 3.24% gain. In contrast, C3is Inc (NASDAQ:CISS) traded at all-time lows, falling to 0.10, and MapLight Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MPLT) also fell to all-time lows at 9.90. Entera Bio Ltd (NASDAQ:ENTX) reached three-year highs at 3.93 after its large percentage increase.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which reflects implied volatility for S&P 500 options, ticked up 0.48% to 18.67.

In commodities, Gold Futures for August delivery rose 0.22% or 9.00 to 4,079.80 a troy ounce. Energy contracts moved lower: September delivery crude oil fell 8.27% or 7.39 to 81.92 a barrel, and the October Brent contract declined 6.93% or 6.35 to 85.33 a barrel.

In the currency markets, the euro was essentially unchanged versus the dollar, with EUR/USD at 1.14 (0.00% change). USD/JPY eased 0.05% to 163.76. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.07% at 101.38.
