Spanish equities finished the Friday session with a small gain, as selected sectors pushed the market higher. At the close in Madrid the benchmark IBEX 35 was up 0.13%.
Sectors that contributed to the advance included Financial Services & Real Estate, Telecoms & IT and Chemical, Petroleum & Plastic, which collectively helped lift share prices across the exchange.
Top performers
The strongest performers on the IBEX 35 were Unicaja Banco SA (BME:UNI), ArcelorMittal SA (BME:MTS) and Endesa SA (BME:ELE). Unicaja Banco climbed 2.27%, adding 0.07 points to finish at 3.33. ArcelorMittal rose 2.22%, gaining 1.32 points to close at 60.82. Endesa advanced 1.70%, up 0.71 points to end the session at 42.41; shares of Endesa reached an all-time high during the session.
Largest declines
At the other end of the board, Acciona (BME:ANA) registered the steepest drop, sliding 5.39% or 13.60 points to close at 238.60. Corporacion Acciona Energias Renovables SA (BME:ANE) fell 3.64%, down 0.82 points to finish at 21.70. Grifols SA (BME:GRLS) declined 3.32%, or 0.35 points, to end at 10.04.
Market breadth and closing picture
Declining stocks outnumbered advancing issues on the Madrid Stock Exchange by 110 to 79, while 24 stocks finished unchanged. Overall, the IBEX 35 closed at 19,782.90, up 25.20 points, or 0.13%.
Commodities and FX
Commodity and currency moves were mixed. Gold futures for August delivery fell 1.51%, a decline of 62.10, to $4,038.00 a troy ounce. In oil markets, crude oil for September delivery gained 1.11% or $0.93 to trade at $84.52 a barrel, while the October Brent contract rose 0.62% or $0.54 to $87.42 a barrel.
In currency markets, the EUR/USD rate was essentially unchanged, moving 0.11% to 1.15, and EUR/GBP was flat near 0.86. The US Dollar Index Futures was trading up 0.22% at 99.94.
This session reflected a mix of sector-level strength and notable individual stock weakness, with commodities and the dollar posting modest moves that accompanied the market close.
