Key Points

  • OMX Helsinki 25 closed down 0.40% as losses in Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Utilities pressured the market.
  • Qt Group (QTCOM), UPM-Kymmene (UPM) and Stora Enso R (STERV) were among the top gainers; Neste (NESTE), Metso (METSO) and Nokia (NOKIA) posted the largest declines.
  • Significant drops in Brent and U.S. crude coincided with the session, while gold futures ticked higher; major currency pairs were broadly unchanged.

Helsinki equities finished the trading day in negative territory on Monday, with the OMX Helsinki 25 index closing down 0.40%.

Sector-level weakness in Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Utilities contributed to the downward move in the index, even as a handful of individual stocks produced notable gains by the session's end.

Top performers

  • Qt Group Oyj (QTCOM) led the winners on the OMX Helsinki 25, advancing 5.67% (up 1.32 points) to finish at 24.60.
  • UPM-Kymmene Oyj (UPM) added 3.16% (up 0.71 points) to close at 23.17.
  • Stora Enso Oyj R (STERV) rose 2.30% (up 0.22 points) to end the session at 9.60.

Laggards

  • Neste Oyj (NESTE) was the largest decliner among the headline names, falling 5.19% (down 1.63 points) to 29.80 at the close.
  • Metso Oyj (METSO) slipped 4.45% (down 0.75 points) to finish at 16.11.
  • Nokia Oyj (NOKIA) declined 3.77% (down 0.31 points) to close at 7.91.

At the close, advancers outnumbered decliners on the Helsinki Stock Exchange by 101 to 73, while 19 issues ended the session unchanged.

Commodities and external price action

Global commodity prices registered material moves that accompanied local equity volatility. Brent oil for October delivery fell 5.50% (down $5.04) to $86.64 a barrel. U.S. crude for September delivery dropped 6.60% (down $5.89), settling at $83.42 a barrel. Precious metals were mixed: the August Gold Futures contract rose 0.24% (up $9.80) to trade at $4,080.60 a troy ounce.

Currency and index futures

Currency pairs were broadly stable: EUR/USD was essentially unchanged, moving 0.06% to 1.14, while EUR/GBP was unchanged at 0.22% to 0.86. The US Dollar Index Futures was reported at 101.31, unchanged on the session (up 0.00%).

This session illustrated a market where selective strength in industrials and software-oriented names was outweighed by weakness in energy-linked and telecom sectors, with external commodity price swings aligning with the domestic index decline.

Risks

  • Volatility in oil prices, as Brent and U.S. crude both fell notably on the session, poses downside risk to energy-sector equities and indices linked to the commodity cycle.
  • Concentration of losses in Telecoms and Utilities could signal sector-specific headwinds that weigh on related Finnish-listed companies.
  • Currency and futures stability does not eliminate market risk; unchanged FX and the US Dollar Index at 101.31 may coexist with equity and commodity volatility, leaving market direction uncertain.
