German equities finish higher as telecoms and consumer names lead gains

German stock indices closed with modest gains on Thursday, led by strength in telecoms, consumer cyclical and utilities names. The DAX rose 0.15% at the close in Frankfurt, the MDAX added 0.10% and the TecDAX advanced 1.47%. A mix of large-cap winners and heavy decliners produced uneven breadth across the exchange.

Fashion retailer Zalando SE (ETR:ZALG) also contributed to the upside, adding 2.78% or 0.68 points to end at 25.14.

On the downside, Scout24 AG (ETR:G24n) was the session laggard on the DAX, falling 6.02% or 4.60 points to 71.80 at the close. Siemens AG Class N (ETR:SIEGn) declined 4.49% or 12.85 points to finish at 273.10, and defence and automotive supplier Rheinmetall AG (ETR:RHMG) slipped 3.46% or 41.60 points to 1,159.00.


MDAX highlights

In the MDAX, RENK Group AG (ETR:R3NK) led gains with a 5.79% rise to 51.31. Wind turbine manufacturer Nordex SE O.N. (ETR:NDXG) climbed 4.14% to settle at 39.70, and defence electronics group Hensoldt AG (ETR:HAGG) added 3.29% to close at 90.36.

Among the MDAX decliners, IONOS Group SE (ETR:IOSn) fell 5.63% to 30.20 in late trade. Aurubis AG (ETR:NAFG) lost 5.48% to finish at 181.20 and AUTO1 Group SE (ETR:AG1G) dropped 4.41% to 21.22 at the close.


TecDAX dynamics

The TecDAX outperformed peers, led by 1&1 AG (ETR:1U1) which jumped 6.50% to 20.00. Deutsche Telekom AG Na (ETR:DTEGn) was also a top TecDAX performer, up 6.31% to 29.15, and Nordex SE O.N. (ETR:NDXG) added 4.14% to 39.70.

Elsewhere on the tech-focused index, some names recorded losses: Carl Zeiss Meditec AG (ETR:AFXG) fell 3.24% to 29.30 and Elmos Semiconductor AG (ETR:ELGG) was down 2.02% to 145.40 at the close.


Market breadth and volatility

Rising stocks outnumbered decliners on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange by 387 to 280, while 23 issues finished unchanged. The DAX volatility index, which measures implied volatility of DAX options, increased 0.58% to 16.30.


Commodities and currencies

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery were down 0.19% or 8.05 to $4,297.15 a troy ounce. Crude oil for September delivery rose 3.23% or 2.43 to reach $77.65 a barrel, and the October Brent contract increased 3.76% or 2.99 to trade at $82.44 a barrel.

On the foreign exchange front, EUR/USD was essentially unchanged at 1.15 (unchanged 0.29%) and EUR/GBP was unchanged at 0.86 (unchanged 0.27%). The US Dollar Index Futures rose 0.31% to 99.85.


The close-to-close action reflected a mix of sector leadership from telecoms and consumer cyclicals, alongside notable weakness in select industrial and technology-related names.
