Germany's stock market closed the trading week with a split performance on Friday, as sector-level gains in Technology, Food & Beverages and Software were counterbalanced by declines in Construction, Media and Chemicals.
At the Frankfurt settlement, the DAX rose 0.07%, while the MDAX fell 0.59% and the TecDAX ticked up 0.07%.
Leading and lagging names
Among DAX-listed stocks, Infineon Technologies AG (ETR:IFXGn) was the strongest performer, closing up 3.70% - a move of 2.20 points to finish at 61.67. RWE AG (ETR:RWEG) added 1.64%, ending the session at 57.18, and SAP SE (ETR:SAPG) gained 1.13% to close at 157.68.
On the downside, Scout24 AG (ETR:G24n) recorded one of the larger declines on the index, falling 3.63% to 74.35. Symrise AG (ETR:SY1G) retreated 3.00% to 89.10, while Zalando SE (ETR:ZALG) dropped 2.38% to 28.26.
Mid- and small-cap moves
Within the MDAX, Aixtron SE (ETR:AIXGn) led gains with a 5.28% rise to 36.27. Wacker Chemie O.N. (ETR:WCHG) climbed 2.97% to 88.50, and TKMS GmbH (ETR:TKMS) added 1.61% to reach 81.90.
Conversely, Redcare Pharmacy NV (ETR:RDC) was the weakest MDAX name, down 5.17% to 61.40. Hensoldt AG (ETR:HAGG) fell 5.03% to 79.76 and CTS Eventim AG (ETR:EVDG) declined 4.57% to 58.50 at the close.
TecDAX highlights
The TecDAX saw Aixtron (ETR:AIXGn) again among the top movers with its 5.28% advance to 36.27. Infineon (ETR:IFXGn) rose 3.70% to 61.67 and Siltronic AG (ETR:WAFGn) added 2.91% to 76.10.
On the other side, Kontron AG (ETR:KTN) declined 5.33% to 22.36, Hensoldt (ETR:HAGG) was down 5.03% to 79.76, and SMA Solar Technology AG (ETR:S92G) fell 3.91% to 52.85.
Breadth, volatility and market internals
Decliners outnumbered advancers on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange by 345 to 310, with 36 shares unchanged. The DAX volatility index - a gauge of implied volatility on DAX options - decreased 4.64% to 18.12.
At the close the headline DAX level was 25,630.78, up 18.75 points or 0.07%.
Commodities and currencies
Gold futures for August delivery fell 1.51% - a decline of 62.10 - to $4,038.00 per troy ounce. In energy markets, September crude oil rose 0.95% or $0.79 to $84.38 a barrel, while the October Brent contract increased 0.56% or $0.49 to $87.37 a barrel.
On foreign exchange, EUR/USD was essentially unchanged at 1.15 (movement reported as 0.12%), and EUR/GBP was also little changed at 0.86 (0.09%). The US Dollar Index Futures moved 0.22% higher to 99.94.
What this means
The session illustrated a market where gains were concentrated in select sectors and names, while several industrial and media-related stocks pulled the indices lower. Market breadth favored decliners and option-implied volatility fell, reflecting a modest reduction in near-term volatility expectations for the DAX.
