Australian equities finished the trading day higher on Tuesday, with the S&P/ASX 200 registering a 0.60% rise to reach a new one-month high at the close in Sydney. Sector gains in Consumer Discretionary, Telecoms Services and Healthcare underpinned the advance.

Guzman Y Gomez Ltd (ASX:GYG) added 7.88% - rising 1.73 points to finish at 23.68, and Viva Energy Group Ltd (ASX:VEA) increased 7.58% - a 0.19 point gain to 2.63 in late trade.
Not all stocks participated in the rally. DroneShield Ltd (ASX:DRO) led decliners, falling 12.26% or 0.26 points to close at 1.83. Stanmore Coal (ASX:SMR) retreated 11.03% - down 0.30 points to 2.42, while Megaport Ltd (ASX:MP1) slipped 5.85% or 1.11 points to end the session at 17.85.

Measures of market volatility eased as the S&P/ASX 200 VIX fell 1.67% to 11.16, indicating a modest decline in implied near-term volatility for index options.
Commodity markets were softer. Gold Futures for August delivery declined 0.69% - down 28.20 to $4,048.80 a troy ounce. In energy markets, crude oil for September delivery lost 1.40% or 1.16 to trade at $81.45 a barrel, while the October Brent contract dropped 1.44% or 1.24 to $84.63 a barrel.
Currency moves were mixed. The Australian dollar versus the U.S. dollar was recorded as unchanged 0.27% to 0.70, while AUD/JPY fell 0.28% to 114.12. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.04% at 101.35.
Market participants will note the concentration of gains in a few names alongside broader weakness in stock-level breadth. Volatility and commodity price movements were modestly lower, and the major currency cross rates showed limited directional momentum by the close.
