Commentary from Brandon Thurber (VP, Data Sales & Client Success at NRS)

“Same-store sales in June 2026 increased 3.4% compared to June 2025, a lower rate of increase than the average in recent months, as units sold and baskets both decreased year over year. However, our measure of inflation dropped sharply -- to just 1.3% year over year compared to 2.3% last month.

“The hydration and refreshment categories posted out-sized gains, with expansion of the coconut water, sparkling water and non-alcoholic beer categories outpacing soft drinks. Prepared cocktails, and nicotine pouches were also among the leading growth categories, reflecting the continued growth of the adult-use and convenience categories.

Regionally, cities in the Northeast and Upper Midwest continued to outperform relative to the South and Southeast, with the notable exception of the fast-growing Raleigh-Durham metro area, where sales again increased strongly.”
