China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged BRICS members on Tuesday to work in closer concert on a slate of international challenges spanning public health, technology and resource security, according to a statement issued by his ministry.
Addressing a security meeting in New Delhi, India, Wang called for a coordinated BRICS response to the Ebola epidemic in Africa and pressed member states to address global energy and food security concerns. He also highlighted the need for enhanced oversight of the risks associated with artificial intelligence and proposed deeper cooperation on strategic mineral resources.
Wang framed these priorities as part of a broader security agenda. He urged BRICS countries to combat terrorism in all its forms and to oppose the weaponization of outer space. In his remarks the minister said the group should support multilateralism while rejecting unilateralism and protectionism.
"BRICS members need to take the lead in speaking up for justice and delivering fair outcomes, and elevate their standing and role in international affairs," Wang said, according to the ministry statement.
The foreign minister also encouraged BRICS to back dialogue and political solutions as means to resolve disputes and regional conflicts. He referenced the conflict between the U.S. and Iran as underscoring the importance of upholding international rules and respecting state sovereignty, and he noted the need to adapt to evolving forms of warfare.
Wang highlighted that "traditional and non-traditional security threats are increasingly intertwined, making it timely for BRICS to strengthen dialogue and cooperation on security affairs," remarks that were reported by state agency Xinhua.
The comments outline a multifaceted agenda for BRICS cooperation that spans public health, technological governance, resource strategy and security policy. Wang's appeal places emphasis on collective action and institutional coordination among member states while reiterating a stance in favor of multilateral approaches to global challenges.
