Turkey's main equity index edged lower at the close on Monday, with losses concentrated in the Textile & Leather, Transport and Telecoms sectors. The BIST 100 finished the session down 0.11% as more than twice as many stocks fell as rose. A handful of mid- and small-cap names posted strong gains while several larger issues led declines. Commodity and FX moves included higher crude and a firmer dollar against the lira.

Key Points

  • BIST 100 closed down 0.11% as declines outweighed advances, with 412 stocks falling versus 195 rising and 13 unchanged.
  • Sector pressure was notable in Textile & Leather, Transport and Telecoms, which contributed to the market's weakness.
  • Notable intraday movers included Tekfen Holding (TKFEN), Europen Endustri (EUREN) and Fenerbahce Futbol (FENER) on the upside, and Mia Teknoloji (MIATK), TAV Havalimanlari (TAVHL) and Sok Marketler (SOKM) on the downside.

Istanbul equities ended the trading day in negative territory on Monday, with sectoral weakness in Textile & Leather, Transport and Telecoms contributing to the downward pressure on the benchmark.

The BIST 100 closed the session down 0.11%.

Advancers were outnumbered by decliners on the Istanbul Stock Exchange, with 412 stocks falling and 195 rising; 13 issues finished unchanged.

Commodities and FX

In commodities trading, June gold futures were down 1.30% or 62.10 to trade at $4,725.30 a troy ounce. Crude oil for May delivery rose 6.36% or 6.14 to $102.71 a barrel, while the June Brent contract increased 7.01% or 6.67 to $101.87 a barrel.

Market takeaway

The session showed breadth skewed to the downside, with losses concentrated in industry groups that include Textile & Leather, Transport and Telecoms. While several smaller-cap names recorded double-digit percentage moves to the upside, that strength was not sufficient to offset the larger number of decliners across the exchange.

Information in this report is limited to the trading results and market data recorded at the close on Monday and does not attempt to diagnose causes beyond the price and volume movements reported.

Risks

  • Sector concentration of losses in Textile & Leather, Transport and Telecoms could pressure earnings and valuations for companies operating in those industries.
  • Rising oil prices, with crude and Brent up sharply, may increase input costs for transport and industrial firms, impacting margins.
  • Currency moves - a firmer USD/TRY and EUR/TRY - could affect import costs and foreign currency exposures for Turkish corporates.
