Canva said on Tuesday that it has integrated its design tools into Google Gemini, enabling users to create and modify designs without leaving the Gemini AI assistant interface. The connection follows prior integrations Canva has launched for other AI assistants, and it makes design capabilities accessible directly in chat-based workflows.
After linking a Canva account to Gemini, users can summon Canva by typing @Canva. From there they may instruct Gemini to generate new designs, search for content already stored in Canva, or perform edits using plain-text prompts inside the assistant. The integration covers a range of tasks including generating branded designs from chat prompts, browsing and summarizing existing Canva files, editing text and images across slides, and resizing designs to suit different platforms.
Canva described specific functionality designed for teams and brand consistency. Teams on Canva Enterprise can autofill brand templates using context pulled from Gemini conversations, and users can reference their Canva Brand Kit in prompts so generated designs align with company colors, fonts, and visual identity.
Technically, the connection is enabled by Canva’s MCP Server and an AI Connector that lets the Gemini app link to Canva accounts. The company also introduced a feature called Magic Layers, which separates elements of Gemini-generated images into individual layers so users can edit text and visual components within the same workflow. That approach is intended to convert images created in the assistant into editable layouts without moving between multiple apps.
Canva stated that the integration keeps content private and secure while synchronizing files between the two platforms. The firm described the move as part of its effort to build Canva as an open platform, with the goal of reducing context switching in creative workflows and making design accessible inside the tools people already use for collaboration.
The rollout expands Canva’s presence across AI assistant platforms where users originate and refine ideas. By embedding design functionality inside Gemini chats, Canva aims to shorten the path between ideation and polished creative output while preserving brand consistency for teams that use enterprise-level features.
What this means for users
- Design creation and editing become available directly inside Gemini chats after accounts are connected and @Canva is invoked.
- Brand Kit referencing and Enterprise template autofill are supported to maintain visual identity across outputs.
- Magic Layers enables Gemini-generated images to be converted into editable, layered layouts within the same workflow.
