Brazilian equities ended the session lower on Tuesday, with the Bovespa registering a 0.51% decline at the close in Sao Paulo. The session saw heavier losses in the Public Utilities, Consumption and Real Estate sectors, which contributed to the index's retreat.

Top performers

The strongest performers on the Bovespa included Metalurgica Gerdau SA (BVMF:GOAU4), which advanced 4.55% - a gain of 0.43 points - to finish at 9.84. Gerdau SA Pref (BVMF:GGBR4) also posted a solid rise, up 4.16% or 0.90 points to close at 22.67. Cosan SA Industria e Comercio (BVMF:CSAN3) was higher by 3.60%, adding 0.18 points to end the day at 5.21.

Largest decliners

On the downside, Hapvida Participacoes e Investimentos (BVMF:HAPV3) fell 8.44%, a drop of 1.11 points, to close at 11.97. Sendas Distribuidora SA (BVMF:ASAI3) declined 5.74% or 0.55 points to 9.00, while Raizen SA Preferred (BVMF:RAIZ4) was down 4.08%, slipping 0.02 points to 0.48.

Breadth and volatility

Declining issues outnumbered advancers on the B3 Stock Exchange by a margin of 566 to 400, with 39 stocks finishing unchanged. The CBOE Brazil Etf Volatility, which measures implied volatility of Bovespa options, moved lower by 0.37% to 32.17.

Commodities and futures

Across commodity markets, Gold Futures for June delivery eased 1.84% - down 86.31 - to $4,607.39 a troy ounce. Crude oil for June delivery rose 3.42%, gaining $3.30 to settle at $99.67 a barrel. The July US coffee C contract climbed 1.27% or 3.65 to trade at $292.15.

Foreign exchange and dollar futures

Currency moves included the USD/BRL, which fell 0.14% to 4.98, and the EUR/BRL, down 0.18% to 5.85. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.15% at 98.47.
