June 12 - Ukraine and Russia exchanged drone strikes overnight into early Friday, with each side reporting attacks on military and industrial targets as well as incidents that affected civilians.
Ukrainian forces said they carried out strikes on oil refineries and a petrochemicals plant inside Russia. Officials in Tatarstan reported damage to industrial facilities and said the city of Nizhnekamsk would cancel public events on Friday amid the threat of further drone attacks. Local officials also reported that an apartment block in central Tatarstan was hit, injuring three people.
Ukraine's military identified one of the targeted installations as Tatneft's TANECO oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, describing it as among the country's largest with an annual design capacity of over 16 million tons. The military additionally said it struck the TAIF-NK refinery in Nizhnekamsk and confirmed fires at both refineries.
In the Samara region, Ukrainian forces reported a strike on the Tolyattikauchuk plant in the city of Togliatti. The statement said the plant specialises in synthetic rubbers, which are used in production of solid fuel for missiles. The Samara regional governor had earlier said that Togliatti, a city on the Volga River some 800 km (500 miles) southeast of Moscow, had been subject to a drone attack.
Russian border regions also reported casualties attributed to Ukrainian strikes. The acting governor of the Bryansk region said two people were killed and 10 were injured following an attack late on Thursday.
Railway and electrical infrastructure in Ukraine targeted
On the Ukrainian side, Russian drones attacked railway stations, electrical signalling posts and substations in the northern Sumy region. Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state railway operator, reported that one railway worker was killed and another injured as a result of those strikes.
The incident in Sumy followed an overnight attack on Thursday in which a railway worker was killed and four others were injured in the town of Konotop, also in Sumy. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 117 drones from 18:00 local time (1500 GMT) on Thursday; air defence units downed or neutralised 102 of them.
Separately, local authorities in the southern city of Mykolaiv reported that three people were injured in a drone attack overnight and that 14 private buildings were damaged. They said a further drone attack early on Friday injured one man. These reports could not be independently confirmed.
Defence claims and civilian impact
Russia reported that it had downed 231 Ukrainian drones overnight, citing its defence ministry. Both sides have denied deliberately targeting civilians in their respective statements.
The exchanges come after a period of substantial air attacks by Russia on Ukraine in recent weeks, and amid Kyiv's intensification of long-range drone strikes on Russian oil facilities. Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure have been associated with fuel shortages in Crimea and other areas, according to statements in this reporting period.
Immediate local steps and national context
Authorities in Nizhnekamsk announced cancellation of public events for Friday in response to the threat of further drone strikes. The timing coincides with Russia's national holiday on June 12, which is observed as Russia Day.
Officials from both countries issued damage and casualty tallies and released statements describing the targets and impacts of the overnight operations, while air defences on both sides reported neutralising large numbers of incoming drones.
Given concurrent claims and counterclaims from Ukrainian and Russian authorities, several of the reported incidents remain subject to further independent verification.
