TD Cowen has reduced its investment stance on Capri Holdings, moving the stock from Buy to Hold and trimming its price target to $17. The brokerage highlighted that initial operational progress at Michael Kors is encouraging, but said the expected recovery is becoming more dependent on flawless execution across several fronts.
The analyst firm said it remains supportive of Capri management's long-term turnaround plan, but advised that investors should take a cautious posture given continued uncertainty around the company's path to growth. TD Cowen's valuation for Capri stands at 7 times the firm's fiscal 2028 earnings estimate.
According to TD Cowen, Michael Kors must sustain and accelerate a set of strategic priorities to restore durable growth. Those priorities include renovating the in-store experience, using customer data more effectively to guide product development, marketing and pricing decisions, and creating new iconic handbag platforms that can drive long-term demand and pricing power.
The brokerage acknowledged several of Capri's financial strengths, noting a stronger balance sheet, healthy free cash flow generation and efforts to reduce discounting while improving the quality of sales. Despite these positives, TD Cowen identified a number of execution risks that could derail the turnaround.
Specifically, TD Cowen flagged the risk that customers may react negatively to selective price increases in outlet channels, intensifying competition from Coach, and pressure from other luxury and handbag brands that offer compelling combinations of value and fashion appeal. These forces, the firm said, could undermine Michael Kors' efforts to rebuild full-price sales momentum.
TD Cowen's review of recent results found first-quarter Michael Kors revenue declined 7.1%, a modestly smaller drop than the Wall Street consensus that expected a 7.8% decrease. However, management's second-quarter guidance projecting roughly an 11% revenue decline came in well below analysts' expectations for flat sales.
Management continues to forecast a return to growth in the second half of fiscal 2027, but TD Cowen warned that the outlook now allows less margin for execution missteps. The brokerage said the recovery is increasingly reliant on successful outlet transformation, timely new product launches and sustained strength in the full-price business.
Reflecting the heightened execution risk, TD Cowen lowered its Michael Kors sales forecasts for the third and fourth quarters to approximately a 1% decline and roughly 1% growth, respectively.
