Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ: SHOP) delivered second-quarter results that outpaced analyst forecasts, prompting a sharp premarket rally as investors reacted to stronger-than-expected top-line and margin performance.
For the quarter ended June 30, the e-commerce platform reported revenue of $3.58 billion, above the analyst consensus of $3.45 billion. That total represented 34% year-over-year growth from $2.68 billion a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share were $0.42, versus the $0.40 estimate.
Gross merchandise volume grew 32% year-over-year to $115.6 billion. Free cash flow expanded to $654 million, up from $422 million in the prior-year period, producing an 18% free cash flow margin for the quarter.
"This was a monster quarter: more than 30% growth in GMV AND revenue AND gross profit AND free cash flow," said Harley Finkelstein, President of Shopify. "We power every kind of business, and with AI, we’re expanding what’s possible for all of them."
Looking ahead, Shopify provided guidance for the third quarter of 2026 that anticipates revenue growth in the low-thirties percentage range year-over-year. The company expects gross profit dollars to expand in the mid-to-high twenties percentage range; management noted the midpoint of that outlook is 27.5%, which is slightly below the 31% growth recorded in the second quarter. Free cash flow margin is forecast to fall in the high-teens to low-twenties range.
Segment results showed continued strength in merchant-facing services. Merchant solutions revenue rose 37% year-over-year to $2.78 billion, while subscription solutions revenue increased 22% to $802 million. Operating income climbed 68% to $488 million, compared with $291 million in the same quarter a year earlier.
"GMV growth accelerated on top of last year’s already strong Q2 with solid results across all merchant sizes, channels, and geographies," said Jeff Hoffmeister, Chief Financial Officer. "Alongside this momentum, we continue to drive operating leverage, which flowed through to 18% free cash flow margins."
Market reaction was immediate: shares moved sharply higher in premarket trading, reflecting investor reassessment of near-term growth and profitability prospects after the company exceeded both revenue and adjusted EPS expectations.
