Motorola Solutions shares climbed 5.7% in after-hours trading to $463 after the company reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter 2026 results.
The public safety technology firm posted adjusted earnings per share of $4.41, exceeding the Wall Street consensus of about $3.84. Revenue for the quarter totaled $3.13 billion, beating analysts' expectations of roughly $3.0 billion and representing 13.3% year-over-year growth.
Management also disclosed a record second-quarter backlog of $15.6 billion, up 11% from the same period a year earlier. The company characterized the backlog as providing robust visibility into future demand across its public safety and enterprise security offerings.
Alongside the quarterly results, Motorola Solutions raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to approximately $12.98 billion, up from prior guidance of $12.8 billion. The firm also lifted its non-GAAP EPS guidance range to $17.62 to $17.72, from a previous range of $16.87 to $16.99. Both revised figures exceed analyst consensus estimates.
Geographic performance showed notable strength internationally, where revenue rose 25% year-over-year to $923 million. North American revenue contributed $2.2 billion, an increase of 9% versus the prior year.
Profitability metrics improved as well. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded meaningfully in the quarter, and operating cash flow increased sharply year-over-year, reflecting an improving profit profile as software and services make up a larger portion of the company’s mix.
The broader market environment provided a constructive backdrop for the stock's after-hours move. U.S. equities had a generally positive regular session, with the S&P 500 edging up 0.2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average also rising 0.2%. The day’s market tone was supported by a solid earnings season and softer-than-expected labor market data - JOLTS job openings fell to 7.36 million in June - which helped temper rate-hike concerns.
Industrials and communications sectors performed well during the regular session, creating a favorable setting for company-specific news to have an outsized impact on share prices. Taken together, the combination of a meaningful earnings and revenue beat, a record backlog signaling durable demand in mission-critical communications, and a guidance raise that cleared consensus created conditions for a sharp after-hours re-rating.
The after-hours move lifted Motorola Solutions' stock from a prior close of $438.14 to $463, moving the share price noticeably closer to its 52-week high of $492.22.
What this means
The results highlight the company’s current momentum across both product sales and recurring revenue streams, reflected in stronger margins and cash flow. The record backlog and upgraded guidance suggest management sees sustained demand ahead, while the proportionately large international growth underscores geographic diversification in the quarter.
