Microsoft will use its annual developer conference keynote in San Francisco to present new developer tools designed to bring AI capabilities to both PCs and cloud infrastructure. CEO Satya Nadella is expected to discuss efforts to make agent-style AI safer for businesses, support for a newly unveiled Nvidia chip aimed at premium laptops, and updates to Microsoft's own AI models for tasks such as code completion.

Key Points

  • Microsoft will use its developer conference keynote to reveal developer tools for AI on PCs and in the cloud.
  • Agent-based AI tools like OpenClaw are gaining traction but pose safety concerns for many businesses and consumers.
  • Microsoft is expected to detail support for a new Nvidia chip aimed at premium laptops and provide updates on its own AI models.

Microsoft will hold its yearly software developer conference on Tuesday in San Francisco, where the company is expected to roll out tools aimed at developers building artificial intelligence applications for both personal computers and cloud platforms. The keynote address by CEO Satya Nadella is set to explain how Microsoft intends to compete across cloud services - where it is both a partner and competitor to firms such as OpenAI - and to expand its presence on PCs.

One area likely to receive attention is so-called agentic AI - systems that manage groups of AI "agents" to perform routine tasks for users. The open-source program OpenClaw is cited as an example of that class of tools. OpenClaw has grown in popularity in China and has been credited with helping Apple sell Mac computers, but it also poses risks that make it unsuitable in its present form for many business uses.

Analysts expect Microsoft to present measures aimed at making these agentic tools safer for business environments and for the roughly 1 billion people who use the Windows operating system. Part of the expected announcements includes details on how developers will access support for a new Nvidia chip unveiled on Monday, a chip intended to bring more AI processing directly to laptops. That chip is planned for use in machines priced to compete with Apple’s premium laptops.

The chip announcement has already been linked with near-term gains in share prices: Microsoft and major PC manufacturers such as Dell Technologies saw stock lifts after the reveal. Observers cautioned, however, that it may take companies time to adopt the new class of machines.

Alongside hardware support, Microsoft is anticipated to provide updates on its own AI models. These models are part of the company’s effort to compete in areas such as code completion with offerings from rivals including OpenAI’s Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Code. Nadella’s keynote is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET.

Context on valuation tools noted in conference materials

The conference material also references valuation discussion around Microsoft stock. A published note describes a Fair Value calculator that uses a mix of 17 industry valuation models to estimate intrinsic value for Microsoft and other stocks. The material positions that tool as a way to assess whether Microsoft shares represent a buying opportunity.

Implications for markets and developers

  • Developers building AI for both cloud and endpoint devices are a primary audience for the announcements.
  • PC makers, chip manufacturers and cloud providers are the market segments most directly affected by the hardware and model announcements.
  • Enterprise IT and security teams will be attentive to safety measures for agentic AI before broader business adoption.

Risks

  • Agentic AI tools such as OpenClaw present risks that make them unsafe for many business environments - impacts cloud software, enterprise IT and PC deployments.
  • Even with a new Nvidia chip for laptops, analysts expect corporate adoption of the new machines could take time - affecting PC makers and IT procurement cycles.
  • Wider deployment of AI on endpoints requires robust safety measures before the world’s approximately 1 billion Windows users can rely on these tools daily.
